Nights at sea

Three, five or seven nights on a crewed catamaran or yacht out of Phuket: a different anchorage every evening, the islands before the day boats arrive, and nothing to organise but who is coming.

Three ways to do it

  • 3 nights

Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi

Day one north into Phang Nga Bay: sea caves by canoe, a night at anchor among the limestone towers. Day two across to Phi Phi: Pileh lagoon before the day boats, Bamboo Island's sandbar, a night off Phi Phi Don. Day three to Racha or Coral Island for the clearest water, then a sunset sail home.

Season: All year; calmest from November to April.

Best for: A long weekend for a couple or two families, and first-time sailors.

  • 5 nights

Phi Phi, Lanta and the Rok islands

Phi Phi first, then Koh Lanta's long western beaches, then Koh Rok and Koh Haa, the clearest reefs in the south, with two nights in the park. Phi Phi Leh at dawn on the way back and Racha for the last swim.

Season: November to April, when the southern marine parks are open.

Best for: Snorkellers and divers, a group of friends, a family week.

  • 7 nights

    The Andaman week

The five-night loop plus two nights in the north: the Similan and Surin islands when the park is open, or Phang Nga Bay's hongs with a night at anchor inside a lagoon. Every anchorage different, every meal on deck.

Season: 15 October to 15 May for the Similans; the Phang Nga version all year.

Best for: The whole holiday on the water: up to ten guests, a crew of three to five.

How a voyage is priced

  1. 1Boats are priced per night for the whole boat; the card shows the lowest night rate.
  2. 2Provisioning or a chef, and marine park fees, are added per guest; fuel is added on the motor yachts.
  3. 3A quote comes back within the hour with two or three boats; a 30 percent deposit holds the dates.
  4. 4Weather never costs you the deposit: the route moves, or the date does.

Questions people ask

How many nights can we book?

From two nights to two weeks. Three, five and seven are the formats we quote fastest, and the routes above are the ones the captains know by heart.

Who cooks?

A chef on the motor yachts and the larger catamarans. On the smaller catamarans the crew cooks from the provisioning we plan with you before you board.

Can children come?

Yes. The catamarans are the steadiest boats, the three-night route stays in sheltered water, and every boat carries children's life jackets.

Is a week on a boat expensive?

A catamaran for eight comes to roughly ฿35,000 to ฿55,000 per person for a week, crew, cabins and every anchorage included, which is less than a crewed week in Croatia or the Caribbean.

What about seasickness?

Catamarans barely heel, the routes run with the swell rather than against it, and every night is spent at anchor in calm water.
